Scottish Terriers are great dogs. I have owned Scotties for a little over eleven years and I fell in love with the breed. The Scottish Terrier is a small, compact and sturdy built dog. They usually weigh between 17-23 pounds when full grown. Height at the withers for either sex should be around 10". Scotties are rugged-looking dogs with a wirey outercoat supplemented by a soft, thick undercoat. The undercoat keeps them warm while the outercoat helps protect them from the elements. They do not shed, but do require grooming. The coat should be trimmed to give the distinctive Scottish Terrier look. Although a tiny puppy will only need a gentle brushing, it is important to start getting your new puppy familiar with grooming by brushing him often at an early age. The standard coat colors are black, wheaten and brindle. They have small, dark, deep set eyes that show great expression and curosity. Their ears are prick and erect and should never be cut. Their tail should be about seven inches long and stand erect and never docked.
